Role of sports economy becomes increasingly vital as Industry envision India’s future as a global powerhouse by 2047: CII

HNExpress Staff Reporter : “Sports economy becoming vital not just as an industry, but as a catalyst for national pride, employment, youth engagement, and social cohesion”, said Mr Shashwat Goenka, Chairman, CII Eastern Region & Vice Chairman, RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, at the “India@100: Leadership Insights from the Sports Economy” initiative organized by CII Eastern Region, in Kolkata, today.

Mr Goenka further stated that the global sports industry revenue is projected to surpass $680.7 billion by 2028, driven by robust sponsorship, international events, and digital innovation. India must crave out its own unique growth story within this ecosystem balancing tradition with innovation, and scale with inclusivity. Few of the major steps taken are Khelo India initiative and India’s recent expression of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with an eye on bidding for the 2036 Olympics.

Emphasizing the growing professionalism in cricket, Mr. Zaheer Khan, former member of the Indian Cricket Team, highlighted the crucial role institutions play in developing sports infrastructure, particularly at the regional level. He noted that the inclusion of cricket on the global stage marks a significant step toward the sport’s globalization. While discussing leadership in the sports economy, he underscored the importance of sustainability and equality as foundational pillars for the future of sports. He also said, “It would be an honour to coach team India, if BCCI approaches”.

Mr Rishabh Pant, Member, Indian Cricket Team emphasized the importance of leading a life focused more on the process than the outcome. He advocated for striving to become a better version of oneself each day, calling it the key to long-term sustainability. Reflecting on the accident he experienced recently; Mr Pant spoke about the vital role of family support during tough times. He shared that finding happiness within oneself is essential to navigating the highs and lows of life. He also revealed that getting the opportunity to wear the Indian jersey has been the most significant moment of his life.

Mr Nicholas Pooran, Former Member of West Indies Cricket Team, emphasized that while the skills of the game are widely understood, mental resilience is crucial for optimal performance. He noted that when players manage pressure effectively, it allows them to showcase their abilities. He also highlighted the importance of a team-oriented approach for achieving collective advancement.

Mr Debasish Dutta, Chairman CII West Bengal State Council & Director, BGS Group highlighted that in West Bengal, the ingredients for a thriving sports economy are already present, where we have the infrastructure, the institutions, the fan base, and the talent. To add up, we need is strategic collaboration between government, private sector, clubs, and community to build a sustainable ecosystem and that is where initiatives of CII can play a vital role.

Mr Jamie Maclaren, Member, Mohan Bagan Super Giant & Australia’s Men’s National Soccer Team, asserted that true leadership goes beyond victories, trophies, or recognition. It involves handling pressure effectively and motivating teammates to enhance their performance. Inspiration can spread rapidly, offering essential support during challenging moments. Mr Dimitrios Petratos, Member, Mohan Bagan Super Giant & Australia’s Men’s National Soccer Team, said staying calm is key and the focus should be on showcasing best skills to your ability.
